CPP/CPS NYS OASAS Requirements

In order to become a Credentialed Prevention Professional (CPP) or Credentialed Prevention Specialist (CPS) in New York State, you must:
- Meet competency and ethical conduct requirements
- Meet work experience requirements
- Meet minimum education requirements
- Pass the international certification and reciprocity consortium/alcohol and other drug abuse, inc. (icrc/aoda) written prevention examination
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Reside or work in New York State at least 51 percent of the time
Becoming a CPP
If you wish to become a CPP, you must complete:- 250 clock hours in the field of alcohol and substance abuse prevention
- 85 Hours: Knowledge of Alcohol and Substance Abuse
All Age Levels and Among People of Diverse Backgrounds and Cultures. - 60 Hours: Prevention Specific Hours Related to the Performance Domains
(Areas of Professional Expertise) - 45 Hours: Professional Development and Ethical Standards
- 60 Hours: Prevention Principals and the Services Continuum
- CPP applicant must have earned a Bachelor's degree
- 4000 hours of supervised experience in an approved work setting as a provider or supervisor of prevention services. (2000 hours must be paid.)
A Master's Degree may be substituted for 2000 hours of work experience.
Becoming a CPS
If you wish to become a CPS, you must complete:- 100 clock hours in the field of alcohol and substance abuse prevention
- 50 Hours: Knowledge of Alcohol and Substance Abuse
All Age Levels and Among People of Diverse Backgrounds and Cultures. - 38 Hours: Prevention Specific Hours Related to the Performance Domains
(Areas of Professional Expertise) - 12 Hours: Ethical Responsibilities
(All 12 clock hours must be focused on Individual and Professional Ethics) - 2000 hours of paid supervised experience in an approved work setting as a provider or supervisor of prevention services
Applicants must have at least a High School Diploma or a General Equivalency Diploma (GED). We will assist our graduates with the application for CPS/CPP.
